There is no central head of the Amish. Each district has its own rules and practices. The old order Amish generally shun electricity and vehicles. Some times electricity can be in a barn for a dairy, and sometimes there will be a phone too. Some new order Amish have electricity and phones in their homes. They still try to live "plain" and will have only the furniture needed and used daily. They still will not have televisions or radios, but here in Missouri many have weather radios to warn of tornadoes. Generally, Amish women do not work outside the home after they are married. We hire a girl to clean our house, but she is engaged and will quit when she marries. If your phlebotomist was a women, she was probably Mennonite. The easiest way to tell here (besides the fact that many drive cars if they have many kids), is that the Mennonite women can wear "fancy" shoes, and will often have purple Nikes under their dress. As I said, this is all in general. Every single area is different.

*edit* I forgot. The Amish here shop at WalMart on Saturday just like everyone else. Also, they use modern doctors for serious medical issues and often for births.

Correction to the other post. I live in Amish country, and many of the Amish do hold jobs in factories and restaurants. In fact, a brother and sister that work together at the same factory both operate machinery and have forklift permits.

What one person explained to me is that they do not refuse to use modern appliances. It's just that they need to study the ramifications of using them. But they deliberate very slowly. For instance, I was surprised to find out that most of the Amish have outdoor grills. They feel it is okay because they allow the Amish the ability to gather together.

Until recently, they shunned telephones, because it leads to the temptation of not meeting face to face. By not having a phone, it means you have to go to the person to talk. But, in the Michigan/Indiana area, some of the Amish communities are allowing phones to be installed in select barns. Primarily for emergencies.

They have lights on their buggies because the State cracked down on this due to the amount of injuries sustained by the Amish after dark. It is very hard to see a black buggy in the dark with a mere triangular reflective patch on the back of a buggy. The Amish or their horses were getting seriously injured when they collided with a vehicle. So the Amish, agreed as they saw the benefit in having the lights.

I don't know about routine medical treatment, but if an Amish person gets admitted to the hospital, their extended family will stay in the hospital with them until they are out of danger. They take their responsibility to their family very seriously.

One thing to note is that there are Amish, Old Order Amish, Shutterites, Henri-ites, and Amish Mennonite that all wear similar clothes. I was surprised about this, but some of those sects will use a DEBIT card at a restaurant.

As far as blood draws, I would think you are more likely to see a Mennonite than an Amish work in the healthcare profession.

If you would like to more about these cultures, check out the website on Menno-hof http://www.mennohof.org/. This is a museum in Shipshewana, Indiana dedicated to educating others about the Amish culture.

As far as I know Amish don't have civilian jobs. They are "self employed".

Probably Mennonite. The Amish have different sects. Just we as Christians have. I have lived in the same community of many Amish. Also stayed with them for 17 day's. Wouldn't do it again but it was interesting.

They aren't against modern technology, they are just very careful about getting caught up in such things. They would go to a modern hospital, but haven't heard of many Amish women working outside their community. Mennonites do, however.
