Replacing 50w MR16 halogens with LEDs?

1

Category : Recessed Lighting

Let me preface by saying I’m not a electrician and am new to this recessed lighting game. But what I’d like to do is replace my existing 50w MR16 bulbs with a low energy option (like LED). I’m aware there could be some light appearance issues and the non-dimming factor, but can it be done? I have ELCO low-voltage lighting system, but not sure if the transformer will work with LED replacements. I assume, and correct me if I’m wrong, that if I try LEDs then the worst that could happen would be the LEDs don’t draw enough power for the transformer to work and the lights just don’t turn on?
Thanks for any advice.

Is there a way to have both recessed lights and a ceiling fan in one room without having the ceiling fan throw the light everywhere? We have 8 light cans up in a 20×13′ room.

Cost to build pool house/guest suite/mother-in-law quarters in central California?

Category : Recessed Lighting

I am buying a foreclosure for 0,000, its on a half acre and zoning allows for a separate structure up to 1,200 sq ft. Right now there is ,000 in equity, and prices have been improving. In about 5 years I want to add a pool and a pool house/guest suite and I was wondering about the cost.

The pool would be a basic in ground pool and put in during the off season. Basic pools run -20,000 during the off season, about -10,000 less.

How much would a 1,200 sq ft pool house/guest suite be? And how long would it take to be built? Not luxury, or cheap quality, something in the middle. details below

-The kitchen and front room would be right off the pool area, french doors, 10 ft ceilings, 12" or 18" tile floors, recessed lighting, 2 ceiling fans, built in book shelves, granite counter tops, maple cabinets, stainless steal appliances, etc..

-2 master bedrooms with walk in closets, and master bathrooms. Same theme as kitchen in bathroom (granite, tile, maple), recessed lighting, ceiling fans, etc… not sure on flooring, but I am thinking hardwood floors in bedroom.

- In hallways there would be a half bath for use during pool parties (tile floors). Also storage space and a laundry room.

-House pre wired for Aux, phone lines, alarm, and audio in front room.

-The roof would have to be cement tile to keep the theme of the existing house.

-A "U" shaped pergola would go around the pool and connect the house and pool house. The bottom part of the "U" would be the BBQ area (gas connection already there).
- I was not expecting to do it for ,000 that was just the current equity in the house. I was thinking around 0-130 sq ft. I will have to check on what is considered a full kitchen. I have friends that work in construction, but I am not sure on there availability.

- I guess the items are more higher middle or entry luxury than middle. That is just to keep the same theme as the existing home. However, stainless steel appliances are still in the same range as black/white, tile can be had for -3 (12-18"), hard wood floors for (-5), and pre-wiring is cheaper than ugly monster cables later. I see Luxury as SubZero or professional grade appliances (6 burner stoves etc…), imported tile, exotic wood floors, antique book shelves, wood plantation shutters, etc…

- There is enough room to drive a vehicle on the side of the house, but not a full sized cement truck. Maybe a friendly neighbor would allow a cement truck to drive thru the back of their lot (removing fence)

Is this home really worth $40K more?

The home is:

19 years old
2,000 sq ft

homes around the area are about 130K-170K
It was appraised in 2007 at 7,000

Upgrades added to home since last appraisal:

24"x24" travertine tile floor throughout first floor only (2-story home)
granite countertops
built in stove
stainless dishwasher
no refrigerator
recessed lighting in kitchen area (~6 recessed lights)
granite countertops in master bath

They have it listed at 7,000. (in San Antonio, TX)

Ok…I know it has some upgrades, but do you think it’s really worth ,000 more?

all answers are appreciated…
Oh, and it’s owned by a granite and tile company, so you know they got all that stuff at a discount.

Can I put more than one power supply into a 4 gang box?

Category : Recessed Lighting

I am re-doing my kitchen and for aesthetics, I decided to put all 4 switches for the kitchen and dining room into a 4 gang box (switches for dining room, kitchen area 1, kitchen area 2, and switch for under cabinet lighting). I decided to use 7 recessed lights and I now want to break the lights into 2 circuits because I now have 12 total lights and 2 receptacles (both in the dining area).

I want to split the circuit the circuit in two and thus have two power sources coming into the 4 gang box (supplied by two separate 14/2 wires). I am thinking if I use a double pole breaker with both circuits beside each other (and with a tie-bar between them so they work together) this would be safe. My reasoning is that in order to work on any of the switches, both breakers will have to be off (because they are tied) and thus this is acceptable.

The other option I thought of was to supply power with a single 14/3 wire from the two pole breaker – I am just not sure if this can cause some problems having 14 receptacles/lights on a common neutral.

So the big question – am I violating code by having two power supplies in the same 4 gang box? Or am I mitigating things by having them fed by a two-pole tie-bar breaker?

All advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jack

Electrical box humming?

Category : Recessed Lighting

Yesterday one of my kitchen lights (a recessed one) was humming. We figured the bulb was about to burn out, so we just turned the light off to switch out the bulb later. This morning, I walked past the electrical box in the laundry room and it too was humming. Any help/ideas?

the owner’s dehumidifier used to trip the circuit too. they say it has a 1200w capacity… will using a single lamp (not the overhead lights) trip it, and if not, will adding an xbox and a desktop pc to the mix be too much? I know nothing (obviously) about electrical, but any thoughts would help!

can i add recessed can lights in an existing ceiling? There is an access to the attic.?

CFL for Recessed Can Fixture?

Category : Recessed Lighting

I have about 15 recessed ceiling lights They currently have 65 watt R30 flood light bulbs in them. I need much more light output. I am looking for a CFL bulb that will produce the maximum amount of light. It could be a flood, spiral, or pin type CFL. The only requirement is that if I use a uncovered spiral or pin type bulb, the bulb should not protrude from the ceiling can. I dont want the glare. Thanks!
