We have to gut our 15 year old master bathroom due to the fact that the tile was installed improperly. I want to upgrade/update it, but don’t plan on staying in this house more than 4 more years. I plan to reuse the red oak vanity but will replace the vanity top. All of the trim in the house is natural red oak. Have already replaced the knobs & light fixtures with satin nickel. Will replace the faucets with satin nickel as well. What would be the best choice for the vanity top (2 sinks) for resale? Do I need to use granite for resale purposes or would Corian be an option? Also there is a wall to wall mirror above the vanity. I keep reading that those are outdated and that I should replace it with 2 framed mirrors. What do you think–have to take the big mirror down anyhow. I plan to keep it as neutral as possible and just accent with rugs, towels, etc. We need to replace the tile in the shower, around the separate tub (re-using), and re-tile the floor. I love the natural stone, especially slate. Would 12×12 slates tiles be a good choice for the shower & floor–maybe accented with a mosaic border in the slate or recycled glass? I don’t want anything that is hard to clean. We will also replace the glass shower doors, repaint, etc. All of the fixtures are white. I am not into "fancy" and have a limited budget for this project, but I want it to look nice. Would appreciate any suggestions.

I am thinking of painting the vanity in one of our small bathrooms either a dark gray/charcoal color or a chocolate brown color. Right now the vanity has the light wood stain that the builder originally had with the house, and it looks incredibly dated. The sink over the vanity is a light cream color, and the walls in the bathroom are off-white. Depending on whether I choose a charcoal or chocolate color to paint the vanity, I’ll get a new matching mirror and light fixture in similar colors (either dark gray/silver or deep brown, respectively). Which color do you think will look better?

I recently began working at a new job as a bathroom designer at a design firm, I am also a salesperson because I have to sell my design and the products I propose. I recently met with a client who seemed to like the design and at the end when I asked him if we were on the right track, he said we are the most expensive so far. Well a few days later (today) he sends me an email asking me for the manufacturer and model # of all of the lighting, vanities, plumbing fixtures, etc. What do you think he is going to do with this information? My boss said we have to give it to him or he will be offended. I am worried he is going to take my hard work and give my choices to someone else to do. My boss thinks he is going to price shop us and told me to make him aware of the fact that not only is he buying the products, he is buying a well thought out design and a full service provided to him because we warranty our stuff for one year after installation and use only licenses plumbers and contractors. Could any experiences salespeople or designers give me any suggestions on how to handle a situation like this? I have only been doing this for about a month, since I graduated with my degree in design.

Hi, I have a house built in 1952. Our bathroom had two light fixtures (one on either side of the medicine cabinet) wired together and connected to a switch. I wanted to replace the first light (from the switch) with an outlet. The only wires connected to it are one black and one white. I can add a ground to it as the box is grounded. My questions are:

1. Can I do this, and is it as simple as just connecting white and black to silver and gold screws on the outlet?
2. I would really like to add a GFCI outlet, but I am unsure of the wiring for this.

I just got my first vanity only a few months ago because I have really started to get into makeup and I simply love the look of a vanity.

I absolutely love the one i purchased but in order to do my makeup I need good lighting.
My vanity is up againts a wall with no lights around it (right now i have my night stand lamp on it so i can see) but I really need some sort of lighting fixture that isnt tacky or ugly.

My problem is that I do not have the option of putting a fixture in the wall permanently… I was wondering if there are lighting attachments that look like mounted ones but where there is a cord and it just hangs down so i could run it down the back of my vanity since there is a plug in right underneath on the wall.

this mirror is similar to the shape of the mirror on my vanity

http://smcnamara.net/vanity1.JPG

So i was thinking I need 2 lights maybe to sit in the dips on each side of the mirror part..
BUT i still have no idea where i could find something i could do that with..

and what kind of lights should i use for a vanity? what lights will show true color best?

thank you so much!
i hope i get lots of helpful answers (:
