bathroom ceiling fan problem?

About 10 years ago I disconnected my bathroom ceiling fan — a simple job of removing the housing & unplugging the wiring plug from the connection point.
The fan is a combination unit that also has a light, both controlled by a single wall switch. We recently had a home inspection and I needed to make the fan operable. When I plugged the fan back in it did not work. Now, 3 days later I was in the bathroom with the light on and after about 5 min. the fan started to operate. Since then I have been tuning the light/fan off & on at varying intervals. The fan still does not start immediately but the delay seems to be getting shorter & shorter — from 2 min down to 5-25 seconds, depending on how long it’s been turned off.
What is causing this delay? More importantly, what do I have to do to eliminate it? The fan/light fixture is approx 15 years old. Thanks!

Replacing of the fan or cleaning it.

The electrical contacts and brush inside are dirty.

Or it is going bad.

the bearings are binding up they haven’t been used and there is friction from the moisture. you can probably remove and spray some lube and free it up on a bench then reinstall if not replace it. good luck RC

Turn it off. Spray some Silicone Spray on the shaft and spin it by hand until it loosens up. Do this several times until it spins freely. Then try it for awhile. If it continues to work you are ok. However if after a couple of days it starts binding up again, it is time to replace it. If you can find one for the same size ceiling hole cutout the replacement is quite easy.
