Can I replace a fluorescent light fixture with ballast with a florescent light fixture without a ballast?

My kitchen light fixture cover fell off, the clips that held the cover in place all cracked off. the light and ballast, florescent tubes (2 of them) all work, they are just ugly and I want to replace them. Since there is a ballast, I am unsure if I can replace them with a light fixture that doesn’t have a ballast.

If you replace to ENTIRE fixture, it doesn’t matter what the old fixture used. The NEW fixture should have everything needed to connect directly to your home wiring.

Forget the existing balance. Your new light fixture should come complete with all the required parts.

if it was designed to run with out you can

All fluorescent fixtures have some sort of ballast or a switching supply that operates at a higher frequency than 60 Hz. The ones w/the high frequency switching supply are quite a bit lighter, and may give the impression that they do not have a ballast or equivalent.

So perhaps you want to replace it with one of those newer, more efficient fixtures and if that’s the case the answer is yes.

If the cover is what I think your talking about (2 x 4 or 1 x4 lens cover and clips) they can be bought at Home Depot or any of those stores and save yourself from having to change the whole thing. Unless that is what you want to do.

Hope this helps
