Has modern day comedy become too acerbic?

In this context I am talking mostly about british comedy, which, yes has always been slightly acerbic (in that it is designed to make fun of someone, ussually light heartedly though) However I have found with the ability to watch older sitcoms and newer standup (programs like mock the week etc.) I’ve found that comedy has become more sharp, in that it is designed to cause offence in some, whereas in older times it seems comedy was more light hearted.

What I mean is do you think modern day comedy has become/ is becoming, too harsh and in some cases cruel. Please give your opinoin and reason below.

Yes definitely. The days of the homely comedies have gone, shows like Dads Army, Last of the Summer Wine, Are you being served, Hi de hi. They poked gentle fun at everyone.
Nowadays the idea seems to be to put down as many people as possible and the more sarcasm, the better. The idea seems to be that everyone who isn’t like me is an idiot.
Thankfully we have videos and DVDs.

It has definitely become really acerbic when it comes to politics. Whoever is in charge automatically becomes a target for stand up comics, talk show hosts, and political TV shows (I’m thinking of American ones in this instance, such as The Daily Show and The Colbert Report).
I guess that’s true with celebrities, too. We get it, random TV shows, Lindsay Lohan is an idiot. You don’t have to remind us.
