The most important reason is that the people who design first person shooters haven't had an original idea since Tribes, which introduced base-capture mode.

Even with the great new consoles and great video cards, they think all anyone cares about is Graphics. They train fanboys to go wild about a title 6 months before it's released, and moon about its Graphics. But they don't do anything different.

The fundamental missing thing is reality, namely that the only penalty for getting killed is your KDR gets a bit lower. But players who act like Japanese on a banzai charge will usually get a few kills before dying, and improve their kdr. So all fps's reward people for being stupid and getting killed. As a result, the players never act like people do in a real war.

One exception was the original Socom, where it was just last man standing and if you were killed you had to sit and watch. But it was otherwise a terrible game and the die-hards memorized the spawnpoints so they could spawn-kill with grenades within 5 seconds of a round starting.

Now that MMOFPS are coming into their own, it's possible to make a realistic battle, but they won't do it. How would be to add these elements:

) giant battlefields with battles lasting all day.
) respawn delay at least 30 minutes.
) get promoted every hour you stay alive.
) highest rank sets attack/defend objectives on map. Players must stay within objectives or be penalized. Get killed, respawn as private after 30 minutes.
) no powerups. Get ammo from depots or other players. No health restore. Some recovery if you spend 1 hour in medic tent.
) no health bar. Realistic damage. Shot in the arm, can't use that arm. Shot in leg, limp. Shot in gut, bleed to death in 1 hour without medic. Shot in head, dead.
) cover/blind fire system.
) realistic aircraft, if any.

but like I said they won't do it cause the kids are all into graphics and owning noobs and thinking the "p" key is the "o" key

umm because if modern warfare was like war then if you died your ps3 or xbox or whatever would shut down permanantly and you would never be able to play video games again.
on a serious note because a. when you are playing as special forces in these games they have yet to come out witha game in which your gun jamms and you are with 50 other guys and you have to walk down the street and make freinds and at the same time look for ieds and snipers. if call of duty exactly like war then no one would play it.
