How do you install drywall on the ceiling on new construction recessed lighting?

I followed the direction on installing the hanging bars with the 5" recessed lighting can. The lip of the mounting bracket that hangs down is below the the level of the joists by about the thickness of one sheet of drywall. My first question is, Should this lip hang below the level of the joists? And if it should, how then do I hang the drywall? Do I screw it up on the ceiling and then cut out the holes or do i measure where the hole is, then cut it out and put the drywall up after the holes have already been cut out? I’ve looked all over the internet for help with this and I can’t find the answer anywhere! Please help. Thank you!

the lip should be level with the edge of the joist. After you have installed your cans you can install your drywall with out cutting out the holes. You do this with the aide of a drywall lift. Place drywall on lift, place into position, put screws into outer edges of drywall only. I then remove the lift and use a spin saw to cut the drywall out from the cans. If you mark the centre of the cans onto the drywall prior to putting drywall in place and then cut out the centre of the can, I then run the spin saw on the outer edge of the can to allow easy movement of the can if it needs to be adjusted. This ensures a nice finish when installing the trim kits.

you have to cut the hole first. UNless you’re really good at guessing while supporting the weight of the sheetrock. just an extra note, most tool rental places have drywall ceiling jacks, if you google harbor freight tools and enter item #95852 you’ll see one. hope this helps

MovinonM answer does not meet code in my area. The can must extend to the bottom edge of the sheet rock to meet code in my area. Doing it the way he describes is quick and efficient, but the inspector will fail it and you will have to move the cans down to the bottom of the sheet rock to get approval.

You might want to ask the code inspector in your area and see if they allow cans and electrical boxes to be recessed past the sheet rock. If they do allow it, do the work the way MovinM says, if they don’t, then you need to cut the holes before you put the sheet rock up so they fit over the cans.
