Step 1Turn off the power supply to the lights where you are working by turning off the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that supplies the power to that area in your home.

Step 2Remove the glass covers and light bulbs from the existing light fixture which is to be removed.

Step 3Disconnect the existing light fixture from the electrical box where it is mounted. There should be one or more screws toward the center of the light fixture used to mount it to the electrical box where it is installed.

Step 4Remove any mounting brackets that may have been used to mount your old light fixture.

Step 5Notice how the wires are connected to your existing light fixture. This is how you will have to connect the wires to your new light fixture. There are normally two methods that are used to connect wires to a light fixture. Either the wires will be connected directly to screws on the light fixture or the light fixture will have wires coming from it that will be attached to the wires coming from the electrical box inside of your wall or ceiling.

Step 6Disconnect the wires from the existing light fixture. Make sure you observe how the wires are connected to the existing light fixture because you will probably use the same method to connect your new light fixture.

Step 7Connect the wires coming from the electrical box in your ceiling or wall to your new light fixture. There should be three wires: Black (positive), White (negative), and Green (ground wire). The ground wire may also be bare copper wire. If the wires mount directly to screws on your new light fixture the Black (positive) wire will be connected to the brass colored screw and the White (negative) wire will be connected to the silver colored screw. There should also be a green screw used to connect the ground wire.

Step 8If your new light fixture has wires connected to it already then you will need to connect the wires from your light fixture to the wires in your electrical box using the colored plastic wire nuts that should have been included with your new light fixture. When connecting the wires using the wire nuts you will need to connect the black wire from your light fixture to the black wire coming from your home's electrical box, the white with the white, and the green with the green. To use the wire nuts simply insert the two exposed ends of wire into the wire nut and turn the wire nut in a clockwise direction until tight. Make sure that there is no exposed copper wire at the opening of the wire nut.

Step 9Mount your light fixture to the electrical box in your wall or ceiling using the screws that should have been provided with your new light fixture. Some heavier light fixtures will have a mounting bracket that you will first have to mount to the electrical box. Then you will need to mount your new light fixture to the mounting bracket (see manufacturer's instructions).

Step 10Install the required type and quantity of light bulbs into your new light fixture. Install any decorative covers that may have been included with your new light fixture (see manufacturer's instructions).

Step 11Turn on the electrical supply to your new light fixture by turning on your circuit breaker or replacing the fuse. Turn your light switch on to test your new light fixture.
