How to insulate recessed lighting?

Category : Recessed Lighting

I have a number of recessed lights in my house that open above to attic. The housing for these lights is of the older type that is not insulated or air-tight. Result is that warm air flows up through the lights into the attic and out of the house. Of course, not really a problem in the summer, but it’s a major source of heat loss in the winter. I don’t want to replace the housing on all these lights because that’s sure to be expensive. I also understand I shouldn’t put insulation (even fiber glass) above the lights because of fire hazard. What are my options?

Thanks.

They have retro box kits for some, also airtight trim pieces that may help. You are correct not to insulate over them for fire hazard.
