Is a chandelier considered a sconce?

a sconce is something that holds lights or candles, and typically you hear of wall sconces. Chandeliers also hold lights, would they not be considered a ceiling sconce? I think so but my friend thinks other wise so I was just looking for some more opinions?

A chandelier is not a sconce. If you are looking for a beautiful crystal chandelier or Maria Theresa chandelier, you should check out http://www.kingdomlightingusa.com.

No it is not.

By no means am I an expert, but I’ve only heard of sconces being against a wall, and generally, chandeliers hang in the center of the room, so my answer would be no. Good question!

No they are not the same.
A sconce is a type of light fixture affixed to a wall in such a way that it uses only the wall for support, and the light is usually directed upwards. It does not have a base on the ground. The word applies both to traditional forms of torch lighting, but also to modern gas and electric light sources affixed in the same way.

No, chandeliers are not scones.

no your wrong your friend is right..chandeliers hang from the ceiling and a sconces is on the wall

No a chandelier is not a sconce. Chandeliers usually hang from the ceiling and reflect light with pendant crystals or similar the ‘chandle’ bit refers to candles, they are usually electrically lit now. A sconce is usually made of highly polished metal, sometimes with a mirrored glass back, and fixed to a wall, the metal reflects candle light into the room. Both are ways of maximising the light from a relatively limited source.

I agree with many who have provided information so far. A chandelier is a hanging fixture whereas a sconce is a wall fixture. There are some examples at http://www.candleholderstoday.com that may help you visualize the differences. I hope this helps!
