What are the best type of lights to install in a kitchen?

Should I use track or recess lighting? My kitchen is 10×10 foot. Maybe four recess lights forming a square? What do you think?

Anything exposed (like track lighting) will eventually get greasy, so recessed lighting makes better sense. Try and get a full coverage trim, so you can take it off and clean it from time to time.

Track lighting is not really popular – box stores sell a lot of it because it’s easy to install.
Try to put in 2 lighting circuits.
1 for overall general lighting and 1 circuit for some lighting in bulkheads for accent lighting.
If you have kitchen bulkheads above the wall cabinets, locate some small 3" recessed lights centered over the wall cabinets so they shine on the wall cabinets some and down onto the counter.
Then use larger recessed can lights for the general area-be sure to locate lights over sink, stove, refrigerator, work tops.
The accent lighting looks great when on by itself, you can then turn on *task lighting when actually working in the kitchen area.
