I would recommend that you pick up a copy of Jorge Cervantes’ "The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower’s Bible." And no, fluorescent lights are not appropriate and will not work. It may grow, but not well. During their vegetative state, you’ll want to use Metal Halide on an 18/6 hour cycle. Do not use Mercury Vapor, it may be cheaper but your plants will suffer for it. When it’s time to flower, you’ll switch to a 12/12 light cycle and preferably High Pressure Sodium combined with Metal Halide, to increase yield. The number of lights you need and the wattage depends on how many plants and the space you have. These are high intensity discharge lamps. You don’t want to look directly at them because they can burn your eyes so get some sunglasses. They also draw alot of amperes so the electrical circuitry in the grow area needs to be able to handle it to avoid a fire hazard. You may need an electrician to check it out for you and make sure the wiring is up to code. The lights will also put off a ton of heat so make sure that doesn’t mess up the temp too much and use air conditioning as necessary. Good luck.

It really depends on the amount of plants you are growing and how much you want to spend on your electricity bill. Metal Halide bulbs and High Pressure Sodium work the best. A combination of both works well also.

Regular florescent work fine. Even compact florescent work fine.
