Old 'type' is now T12 but they are still everywhere.
Now the latest is T8 which is more energy efficient and are replacing the T12. Bulb and ballast types need to match.
The fixture 'style' (2x4 or 8' or.... ) needs to fit the application

most common is a 2x4 lay in fixture using T-8 tubes and an electronic ballast. Compact flourescent is the best alternative for replacing incandescent lamps.
