When CFL/compact flourescent lights go bad do they give off a smell?

Today for the first time, one of my CFL bulbs went. I heard an oddish pop noise, but later I smelled a burning rubber smell. I’m guessing that’s actually from the track lighting electrical socket area.
Thoughts?

They *shouldn’t* have any oder, but depending on how they went bad, they certainly can. As you can see from the pictures in the links, those ones most asuredly DID have an oder to them. Quite nasty ones at that.

No it should not smell.

yes it may smell like something is burning, that’s fine, just don’t use it and dispose of it properly because of the mercury inside.

Yes they can smell as the workings are not sealed into anything so if it goes bad in the right place a smell can occur.
